Hotep Means Peace !
Hotep is an ancient kemetic word for peace.
Peace in self, is where peace begins.
During my last year at Morehouse College, I was a given an assignment to find economic solutions for the African-American community. I discovered many problems, but rarely were solutions given. i started looking into our history in search of strategies we used during and prior to slavery to maintain a certain level of economic stability.
I came across Chancellor Williams book: “The Destruction of The Black Civilization” , where he states, ” No people in African history used the concept of kinship ties more effectively then the Lunda in the remarkable expansion of their empire. Even more remarkable then the territorial expansion of the Lunda empire was their idea of a nation as one big brotherhood.”

Also, during my research I discovered the plight of African- American farmers (losing 500,000 acres of land a year).
From my research, I as inspired to share my findings of possible solutions in a magazine I self published called Lunda -The Idea of Familyhood. I felt the Black history I was uncovering needed to reach our community earlier in life, so I created the character, The Adventures of Hotep to connect the children to some of our great past.
In addition to being the mascot of Lunda- The Idea of Familyhood, Hotep has been the mascot for Mo’ Better Market and later The Mandela Farmers Market and now 1st Saturdays and Familyhood.
In theory, since Hotep means peace and promotes Familyhood, “the more people find their voice, their governance, the more peace will spread”.

Hotep!
